\chapter*{Preface}

This is the preface and it is created using a TeX field in a
paragraph by itself containing \verb|\chapter*{Preface}|. When the
document is loaded, this appears if it were a normal chapter, but
it is actually an unnumbered chapter. The \verb|markboth| TeX
field at the beginning of this paragraph sets the correct page
heading for the Preface portion of the document. The preface does
not appear in the table of contents.

\chapter{Introduction}

The introduction is entered using the usual chapter command. Since
the introduction chapter appears before the \verb|mainmatter| TeX
field, it is again an unnumbered chapter. The primary difference
between the preface and the introduction in this sample document
is that the introduction will appear in the table of contents and
the page headings for the introduction are automatically handled
without the need for the \verb|markboth| TeX field. You may use
either or both methods to create chapters at the beginning of your
document. You may also delete these preliminary chapters.

\chapter{Tulsi Sahib}

This lineage can be found at \href{http://www.thewayofsages.com}{the Way of Sages}.

The branch of Santmat which is described in these pages begins with a spiritual adept known as Tulsi Sahab. Tulsi Sahab was born in 1763 and was likely of royal ancestry. Historians speculate that he was the son of of the King of Poona. As the king wished to retire he arranged to have his son coronated. Tulsi Sahab known then as Shyam Rao was of a spiritual bent and fled to search for the Truth. He surfaced many years latter near Hathras as a spiritual adept and teacher of Santmat. Although, he speaks with reverence of his teacher he never mentions him by name. Some scholars claim Tulsi Sahab has a direct lineage with Guru Nanak (see below). This however, is incidental as the true measure of an adept is his spiritual accomplishment. Tulsi Sahab was such a one, he writes in his poetry:

\begin{quote}
	Who have seen within, the splendor of the celestial region with their inner eye, they alone can show the beginning of the beginning.

....Who have penetrated the current of spiritual regions above, they alone know the state of the Inaccessible.

\part{Alternative Inner Light and Sound Traditions}

The groups in this section are considered alternative for any of a number of reasons:

\begin{description}
	\item[commercialism] The system costs money to progress in. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. The best motivation for charging money comes from Bruce Avenell:
\begin{quote}
	There are two explanations for this. Firstly, the Society, as a non-profit organization, does have costs associated with it. The printing of lesson materials, postage, development of new projects such as books, etc. are all aspects of this. Secondly, and perhaps far more importantly, when we instruct you in Sound Current meditation, the effects upon your Being can be profound. Paying dues keeps the associated scales of karma balanced. In that manner, neither we nor you, as the student, are bound to each other karmically and "weighted down" spiritually by those ties.

	...there is no free lunch in this universe.
\end{quote}
	\item[isolated] certain gurus have no obvious master or successors
	\item[westernized] Certain systems contain the ideas of Inner Light and Sound, but they have been modernized or westernized for various reasons, some technical, some commercial.

\end{description}

\chapter{The Eureka Society}

Web presence: \href{EurekaSociety.com}{http://www.eurekasociety.com}

The founder of the Eureka Society, Bruce Avenell, became acquainted with Inner Light and Sound via two Sikh masters \footnote{He received initiation from Kirpal Singh and ran one of his California centers. He also worked with Dr. Bhagat Singh Thind.} In the process, he experienced several of his past lives in Egypt. He also felt that he had developed more awareness than his masters and had direct perception that the guru-chela situation was a form of control \cite{yg505}. Over time, he stripped away the devotional aspects of Inner Light and Sound practice and integrated Egyptian sound practice as well. Mr. AVenell has an optimistic outlook on sexual expression and spirituality. His book ``The Colors of Love'' and the booklet ``Adventures In Understanding the Emotional Spectrums of Love \& Erotica'' are truly a step away from most spiritual Light and Sound paths. For example in Sant Kirpal Singh's small booklet on moral behavior he says to avoid eye contact with the opposite sex. While clearly sexuality is more taboo in the East, another motivating factor for sexual continence is to take the precious energy used to create us and send it upwards to return home. However, Audinometry places a premium on Spiritual Energy Management:

\begin{quotation}
	When you have learned how to keep from running out of gas, you are free to explore the great universe of universes as a free being in your own right. This means you will have a cosmic "driver's license", unlimited energy and all the time you need.

     This energy management gives one the power to move vertically in the spiritual realms and in so doing, one finds that the higher in the spiritual realms one goes, the finer and more fun the experience of life is.

     When you have learned to master the fire of your own life, you will have become a divine being in your own right, your birthright from times beginning.
\end{quotation}

The Eureka Society provides Audinometry which they dub as a Science of Om. My immediate question about such a group is based on my understanding that Om is the creator of the 3 lowest worlds - physical, astral, and causal. Another more attractive definition of Audinometry is ``... the science of measuring, comprehending, controlling and experiencing the sonic chords and light spectrums within your being''.

This group has been around for more than 30 years and there is absolutely no cult controversy anywhere about them. And the modest regular fee they charge saves you from wondering about where the money for books and seminars, etc come from.

\section{Philosophy of the System}

\subsection{Bhakti and Guru Begone!}

\begin{quotation}
	Prayer, devotion, worship have no place in audinometry. Different
regions on the inside have different rules. Devotion is more the
rule in Sat Nam's realm, in the Gold Region. When you get above the
Gold Region, to the Silver Region, devotion becomes bad manners. You
could even say it is against the law. Devotion translates to
conditional love. 'I will love you if you behave is way or that
way'. In the Silver Region, love is unconditional.

And as far as prayer in relation to Deity, think of the concept that
we are all God's, or Deity's children. Does a good parent want to be
worshiped? Of course not. What a good parent wants is for the
children to grow up to be adults in their own right.

Prayer is tied to devotion. Devotion is an energy conduit. One
sends energy to whatever one is praying to. Audinometry is all about
energy management. How to enhance your own energy so that you can
maintain consciousness in the higher realms. We teach how not to
give one's energy away.

It takes energy to reach Deity's level. Energy and energy
management. The ultimate goal in audinometry is to reach Deity's
level, and beyond.
\end{quotation} \cite{yg954}

\begin{quote}
	It's become my opinion that what has come to be called shabd these
days is really bhakti yoga with a little sound current tossed in.
\end{quote}
\cite{yg243}

\begin{quote}
	The radiant form method focuses on a teacher and gives that teacher
free access to your energy supply. With Audinometry you learn how to
manage your own energy, without getting any siphoned off.
\end{quote}
\cite{yg414}

\href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/133}{Kirpal thievery, think for yourself}

With that introduction, let us be precise about how ES views spiritual paths:

\begin{quotation}
	1. The left-hand path, Law and order. You have to learn to obey the
    laws of Creation, such as, 'Do unto others as you would have them
    do unto you'.
2. The middle path, Worship/Devotion. It is supposed to teach one to
    have respect for the wisdom of those farther along the path than
    one is. This path does not go beyond Sach Khand, The Heaven of
    Love, Sat Nam's realm, except for the abilty to have a brief and
    imposing (scary) interview with the Lord of Light.
    - middle path is basically, 'love your fellow man'. It leads to
      the Heaven of Love, 'merging', 'bliss', that sort of thing.
3. The right-hand path. The path of individualization. This is
    the path to graduation, to becoming a Master Creator, a Divine
    Entity in your own right.

\end{quotation} \cite{yg1009}

\subsection{Cosmology}
Sant Mat has a well-described and widely accepted description of the major regions of the inner planes, most artfully demonstrated in \cite{as_inner}.

ES (Eureka Society) also feels that the devotional Sant Mat of today can only take you to Sant Nam and  \href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/256}{no further.}

\subsection{Diet}
\begin{quote}
You don't have to be vegetarian. In fact, you can eat whatever you
want to, it's nobody's business but your own...
	eating meat can be good for your aura, strengthens it...
	The less intelligent the animal is, the easier it is to incorporate,
so we recommend chicken over pork or beef.
You can also eat eggs. We recommend that you keep a diary of what
you eat and see for yourself what affects your meditations, although
I think I can safely guarantee that you'd find that mushrooms have a
big affect.
\end{quote}
\cite{yg414} \cite{yg717}

\subsection{Karma}

The ES view on meat is clearly heterodox to most Sant Mat traditions. But again, their unflagging requirement for direct perception is their defense:
\begin{quote}
	There's a lot of misconceptions about karma out there. What gets me
is these people who claim to understand how karma works do not know
how to get to where the Lord of Karma is. Most of them don't even
know he does actually exist. How can they really know how karma
works?
\end{quote} \cite{yg861}

Christian Pantheism is considered a middle-path teaching as well \cite{yg848}.

\subsection{Samsara}

\begin{quotation}
	in order to get to the Lord Of Karma, you have to get past the
Lord Of The Sound Current, and the only way to do that is to learn to
generate your own sound current. The sound current is like an
umbiblical cord. You can't survive above the Lord Of The Sound Current
until you learn to generate your own energy. People who believe they
have found the way off the reincarnation merri-go-round, if it doesn't
involve learning to generate their own energy, are sadly mistaken.
\end{quotation}

\subsection{Advaita Vedanta}

I spent a long time around people like Sailor Bob Adamson, Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ramana Maharishi, and Arunachala Ramana. These people are into the philosophy and practice of total acceptance of the current moment. An individual with similar trainings, frozenz, showed up in the Yahoogroup and the classic battle between unconditioned, fully-accepting awareness and the necessity of power and control in spiritual development
\href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/240}{takes place}. \footnote{It's also nice to know that the monthly membership rate was 45.00 then and still is now!}

A frequent question amongst Advaitans is ``who is having that experience?''. The answer given by clearoz demonstrates that knowing the knower is simply inadequate. \cite{yg507}

Another advaita hallmark is that there is no you. In a satsang given by Arunachala Ramana he said ``Enlightenment is freedom from being an individual, not having the freedom of being an individual.'' But the Audinometry viewpoint is exactly the opposite:
\begin{quote}
	Audinometry is the path of
individuality. Does a parent want you to climb back into the womb?
No. A parent wants you to grow up and learn to stand on your own two
feet. Audinometry is about learning to be a Divine Being in you own
right. Learning to think for yourself is a paramount lesson in that
process.
\end{quote} \cite{yg858}

\subsection{Buddhism}

About a year later, Jeffrey Brooks, the pioneer of his own form of Buddhism locked horns with Jennifer as well: \href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/434}{interesting reading} also.

\section{The Power of the System}

\begin{itemize}
	\item \href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/135}{clearoz relates some travels of his} where his meditation led him to discover historical coincidences that he had never heard of and that were extremely counter-intuitive.
	\item		\href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/133}{lulalake likes audinometry more than sant mat}

\end{itemize}

\begin{description}
	\item[A different view of Sant Mat]
		\href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/exsat/message/13064}{In this post}, Jen talks of apparent degeneration within the Sant Mat tradition. Now of course, we see some contradiction in this very message. She starts off saying she has a special relationship with her teacher but concludes by saying she's not special. But to have achieved the supracausal region (per her claim) is quite an accomplishment.
		\item[Engineering spirituality]
		\href{http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Audinometry/message/18}{In this post} BKA's daughter openly invites the infamous David Christopher Lane to try out some engineered devices that give spiritual experience.
\end{description}

\section{Practice of the System}

While most systems here are based on projection out of the 3rd eye, Audinometry uses a different portal.
